10th Anniversary

One-Shot

When I first heard details about the one-shot being about an All-Star game I was a bit worried it would be the actual game itself, because what I crave most from post-Haikyuu content is character interactions, not more games. My fears were alleviated when I heard it was going to be 19 pages, definitely not enough for a full game.

It’s so nice to see all the characters shown still being their lovable dork selves. The best interaction for me was my favourite character being asked by my second favourite character if he had been let out of prison yet LOL. Other highlights:

• Kuroo manipulating a bunch of pros into agreeing to participate in his event. Those taunting skills being put to good use for a loftier cause 😁
• Oikawa the eternal child. Seeing him portrayed with his tongue sticking out all the time just makes me think of that saying about how if you pull a silly face, when the wind changes direction your face will get stuck like that lol
• Kenma the mushroom, his fans wondering if the sun is gonna kill him haha
• Akaashi looking at home amongst the rubbish bags 😭
• I understand that kanji is hard (after all, so many side characters misread Karasuno as Torino), but I feel like being translated to English makes some of the characters seem even dumber than they are meant to. I thought this about the whole ‘Nishinoya/Tanaka can’t spell discussion’ extra from one of the manga volumes, but like seriously? Kageyama doesn’t know what charcoal is? Does white charcoal use different kanji/sound very different to plain charcoal in Japanese? I feel bad for Hoshiumi having to listen to their drivel LOL (I also feel bad for him because I spent way too long trying to figure out/remember which character he was meant to be 😣 At first I thought he was Yaku)

All in all, I thought it was a very enjoyable 10th anniversary extra. My only complaint is it would have been nice if there was more spotlight on the Karasuno members, like maybe even a mini-reunion of sorts, but engineering something like that would be very contrived since it would be unrealistic for a whole bunch of adults from different year groups to hold a reunion, especially with Hinata and Kageyama being pros and living in other countries.

Other Comments

• The new characters in Sakamoto are starting to grow on me. But I’ve been a bit annoyed ever since they cut away from Akira’s convo about her aunt, I want to know more about that!
• I learnt something new about tanuki today 😂
• Ehhhh so they’ve decided to ditch the first girl in Dorororon? She just disappeared and never came back…
• Nice reaction Dot, nice reaction 🤣
• So Earthchild had made such a poor impression on me that I forgot it existed and couldn’t figure out which manga the guy in red at the back (on the cover illustration) was from….
