Weekly Shonen Jump: Earthchild Chapters 1-27 Review

I’m surprised that there is even less to like about this series than Shugomaru 😐

Earthchild

(Hideo Shinkai)

February 2022 to September 2022

27 Chapters

What I Liked

  • High quality first chapter – the art was pretty, the characters were older, it was a romance but not your typical high school rom-com, etcetera etcetera. It was very different and I was curious about where the series was going to go story-wise…

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • Avalanche of corny – I suppose my tolerance for romance is low to begin with, but I really had to avoid grimacing during a lot of Reisuke and Kareri’s interactions 🤮 If I felt this way then how did all the actual high-school boys who make up the target demographic feel…
  • Art deterioration – it got real rough at times and the character designs were pretty bland.
  • Unconvincing problem-solving – just yell at God and be stubborn and everything will work out 🙄
  • Poor pacing – there were a lot of moments where they revealed a ~big thing~ to move the plot forward and then suddenly put the brakes on any momentum that was starting due to Reisuke changing his mind. It felt like mild whip-lash (mild because my investment in the story was so low)
  • Baby Mamoru is not cute – for a series with so much focus on the baby they could have at least made him adorable. Honestly, his eyes were pretty creepy.

Conclusion

This series confused me a lot. I couldn’t tell what it was trying to be about. The hardship of parenting with a supernatural twist? “The world’s greatest love story”? I absolutely did not enjoy it and won’t miss it.
