Weekly Shonen Jump: PPPPPP Chapters 1-70 Review

I went into this thinking I wouldn’t like it, even though I play piano, because I don’t like classical music (to listen to or to play).

PPPPPP

(Mapollo3)

September 2021 to February 2023

70 Chapters

What I Liked

  • I don’t like classical music in any way, yet I still ended up really liking this series, so kudos
  • Yeah it’s cheesy, but I love that the siblings’ names follow the Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti convention 😂
  • Goddam Meloli had some nice dresses
  • Furusu learning she wanted to be a conductor, not a pianist

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • Even though I really liked this series, so was actually paying attention each chapter, I started getting very lost when Fanta’s arc started.
  • Maybe they spent too long on Mimin and Meloli’s relationship?
  • Given how ‘atmospheric’ the series was, it probably would have worked better in Manga PLUS, where they could have more pages to really ‘build’ on the visual symbology. I’m thinking like Fujimoto’s one shots and Chainsaw Man Part 2, where he spends many panels just showing slight changes in facial expressions.
  • They probably should have given Otogami Snr more page time, or at least given hints/details about his goals/motivations

Conclusion

I will definitely buy this (digitally, since that’s the only option), because I would like to try reading the chapters back to back and see if things flow/make sense a bit better. And despite saying I don’t like listening to classical music, I would like to listen to the piano pieces referenced. I think it would make for a very fun experience! Especially since it’s highly unlikely this will get animated.

At first, Mapollo3’s art-style felt very rough, but gradually grew on me (Meloli’s dresses and Furusu’s cuteness played no small part in that). I hope in their next series the art will be a bit more polished.
