Weekly Shonen Jump: Ginka & Glüna Chapters 1-29 Review

So how much of Glüna (pronounced Luna)’s name was an automatic strike against this series? 😝

Ginka & Glüna

(Shinpei Watanabe)

September 2023 to April 2023

29 Chapters

What I Liked

  • A spunky female lead!
  • Lots of supporting female characters!
  • The visual/symbolic representation of magic/glyphs

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • I felt like Watanabe-sensei wasn’t confident on Beretta and Anemone and wrote them out too quickly. I was so hoping for a girl-power three musketeers…
  • In general, a lot of characters were introduced before being thrown to the wayside (Mini Gin, the sword boy who hates magicians who’s name I believe starts with L), before they were really even given a chance.
  • Ok, maybe ideas in general were introduced and discarded, I thought the Ginka shards plot point was decent and had potential to be the main plot thread weaving together individual arcs.
  • It started feeling like Watanabe-sensei was throwing ideas at the wall with the intention of seeing what would stick, but averted their eyes before actually seeing the results…I would get excited about certain aspects introduced in one chapter that would fizzle out to nothing in subsequent chapters.
  • The main bad guy wasn’t really fleshed out much until the series was already canned.

Conclusion

Even if it was meandering (or more bluntly, aimless), I enjoyed the individual chapters of this series and thought the art was pretty good. I won’t be missing this series, but am looking forward to Watanabe-sensei’s next work!
