Weekly Shonen Jump: Ichigoki’s Under Control! Chapters 1-19 Review

I actually had fairly high hopes from this one, since the author wrote I’m From Japan, which I thought I’d read was well received… 😐

Ichigoki’s Under Control!

(Seiji Hayashi)

November 2022 to April 2023

19 Chapters

What I Liked

  • Flower grew on me with his weird descriptions
  • I had no objections to Kai
  • Seeing grown-up versions of all the characters even if I didn’t remember who most of them were

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • Misao was a bit annoying
  • The series felt like it mistook random for funny. A lot of things were outta nowhere but they didn’t even make me crack a smile.
  • Too many characters in such a small amount of time. I feel like a gag manga needs to gradually expand and solidify the main cast. For example, Saiki K started off with *such* one-note side characters, but once you thought you had figured them all out, they started throwing curveballs or playing them off each other really well. Even Roboco has done a fairly good job with it’s core cast. I think that’s why I ended up liking Flower, he showed up often enough.
  • It was another gag manga in a magazine choc-full of them: Witch Watch being the clear king of the lot, and Highschool Family and Roboco having solidified their place in the line-up (although Highschool Family did end up getting cancelled this year too)

Conclusion

While it never grew on me, I never had to force myself to read it either. Hopefully Hayashi-sensei hits on a better gag-premise next time round. And polishes his art a bit more. Tbh, I read the Jump Start of I’m From Japan, and from memory the art was better in that 😶
