Weekly Shonen Jump: Mashle: Magic and Muscles Chapters 1-162 Review

Ahh Mash. Congrats on making it to 18 or so volumes. Pretty good showing!

Mashle: Magic and Muscles

(Hajime Kōmoto)

January 2020 to July 2023

162 Chapters

At first I was very unimpressed by this series. Then at some point, I started embracing the stupidity. In fact I can remember the exact point I did a 180 – the part where Mash spins around to create centrifugal force….I’ve completely forgotten why and what fight that was, but that was the turning point (absolutely no pun intended) 😂

My main issue with Mashle was how rote it was in terms of friendship and hardwork. I could forgive Gintama for turning the corniness to 1000%, but Gintama was otherwise 1000% funny. Mashle was usually pretty predictable so not that funny. But when it did pull a joke outta left field, it was hilarious 😁

The art was pretty rough. I wonder if it would have been more popular if it was more polished. I suppose it made it a little funny that the pretty boy characters were kinda off-model a lot.

My favourite character was definitely Finn. A worthy apprentice to Shinpachi’s tsukkomi. I was happy that he actually had a pretty cool magic ability. I don’t think I particularly liked any of the other characters 😅

So overall, I enjoyed Harry-Potter-crossed-with-One-Punch-Man. Not enough to buy it physical or digital, but once I warmed to the series, I never felt like it was a chore to read. Well done Mash, a solid silver rank for you. Enjoy your cream-puffs!
