Manga Plus: Moebana Chapters 1-28 Review

I started reading this before Manga PLUS really revved up the new serialisations, and then kinda stalled on it until Yokoyama-sensei’s new work came out, which made me think I’d better finish this one first 😅

I really liked the concept of this – flower anime otaku joins ikebana club. But it never really grabbed my attention so I stopped reading it around 15 chapters in, in favour of other manga serialisations. After picking it back up, I realised why I wasn’t super into it:

  • Tsukumo kinda stopped doing anime character themed arrangements and started doing more serious ones
  • I liked the ikebana arrangements but the series felt more focused on the relationships than the flowers
  • Related to the above, there were too many rivals. Maybe the series was meant to be much longer, so the rivals ended up being a lot less fleshed out than intended

The character designs were ok, but the ikebana were beautiful. I also liked the various commentary on the arrangements. I would have liked to have seen more of the Garden Bouquet characters though (in general, not just as ikebana arrangements).

It was nice that Tsukumo bonded with his sister early on. And I also loved the final chapter. It was worth reading to the end for that reveal 🤣
