What I Liked
- Akari was cute
- The aunt/gang boss was cool
- The aunt’s backstory
Where I Think Things Went Wrong
- The boxing was a bit fantastical? It feels like a very grounded sport to me, I would have preferred if they stuck to real techniques (but then a kid would have no chance)
- The war as the background setting was unsettling but also felt like a rip-off of Grave of the Fireflies, which feels like a horrible thing to say…
- I feel like there could have been some insightful things said about forced positivity but the chance was squandered.
- The dad was a boring character.
- The art was unpolished.
- Debuting around the same time as Martial Artist Asumi probably didn’t help.
Conclusion
The ending to this was so odd. It mostly just made me surprised that being a cobbler is a viable job in Japan?
