Weekly Shonen Jump: Fabricant 100 Chapters 1-36 Review

Shame about this one, I thought it had potential.

Fabricant 100

(Daisuke Enoshima)

December 2022 to September 2023

36 Chapters

What I Liked

  • Fabricant 100 herself was pretty cool. She stayed true to her objectives and I thought her conclusion made sense based on her personality
  • Ayako’s hair and internal thoughts in black speech bubbles 😋
  • The story arc about the theatre singer. One of the two page spreads was particularly masterful, and story wise, it did well in showing you can’t trust Fabricants because they don’t share the same values as humans.

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • 100 Fabricants makes it sound like it will be a long slog via a Fabricant per week formula
  • Ayako’s argument about being too self-sacrificing was too circular, it was actually kinda annoying
  • They withheld the information on the Mortsafe agent abilities for too long, and then didn’t really expand on them in a satisfactory way
  • The Mortsafe director probably had an interesting backstory that we never got to see
  • Ashibi’s training arc really bogged the series down (although it was probably already on the chopping block by that point)
  • The doctor’s backstory would have been more impactful if we actually knew stuff about the villagers he was trying to recreate, and could see how the Fabricants were accurate/twisted versions of the originals

Conclusion

I got Black Butler vibes from the series early on, but unlike Black Butler, it felt like Weekly Shonen Jump couldn’t handle having a main character with no particular powers. I suppose unlike Ciel, Ashibi didn’t have money or influence to make up for his lack of fighting prowess. I think the series could have been quite fun if Ashibi developed psychological ways to control/manipulate No. 100 (in more ways than just I’m gonna off myself/bleed myself to death), but that probably also doesn’t fit in the WSJ mould 😅
