Weekly Shonen Jump: Tenmaku Cinema Chapters 1-21 Review

Sad to see this go but at least it ended neatly.

Tenmaku Cinema

(Yūto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki)

April 2023 to September 2023

21 Chapters

What I Liked

  • Learning about film-making
  • How all of Shinichi’s friends pooled their talents to make The Shore
  • Himeki building friendships
  • The art is great as expected

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • Tenmaku wrote the script then ended up not really doing much. Felt like a waste of the ghost set-up
  • Did we ever find out how he died???
  • Woulda been cooler if Shinichi/the movie club had a girl member or more
  • They rushed through the friends a bit so they didn’t end up being that memorable.
  • There was potential for Himeki’s director to be more of a mentor
  • I think it would have been great if Shinichi ended up going to a performing arts/media high school and met other high schoolers who were super passionate about their individual film aspect.

Conclusion

I really liked this despite it’s wasted potential. I’ll definitely buy the digital tankobon 🙂 Looking forward to the next work from this duo!
