Manga Plus: 2023 in Review

It’s been a crazy year since Shueisha decided to localise everything that goes onto Jump+… I really appreciate it though, there were quite a few series I really enjoyed! Series below are those that have passed the 10 Chapter Test. Very glad I’ve implemented that system, it makes things feel manageable 😅

Continuing From Last Year

  • Oshi no Ko – buying the tankobon. Still my overall favourite manga being simulpubbed.
  • Spy x Family – tankobon on the wishlist
  • Deranged Detective: Ron Kamonohashi – please please release this digitally at the very least 😭
  • Ghost Reaper Girl – tankobon on the wishlist
  • Show-ha Shoten! – on the fence about whether to buy this or not…
  • Dandadan – tankobon on the wishlist, looking forward to the anime!
  • MARRIAGETOXIN – leaning towards buying the tankobon and looking forward to the anime!
  • Magilumiere Co. Ltd. – not gonna buy the tankobon but the anime should be good
  • Chainsaw Man Part 2 – I don’t own Part 1 so I guess I won’t buy Part 2, although I like it much more than Part 1
  • You and I Are Polar Opposites – leaning towards buying it. I’d say it’s not as good as Horimiya but it’s still very sweet and occasionally funny.
  • Make The Exorcist Fall In Love – not gonna buy this
  • Kaiju No.8 – not gonna buy this
  • Choujin X – not gonna buy this (I do like it more than Tokyo Ghoul though)

Series That Ended

  • Excuse Me Dentist, It’s Touching Me! – man I would buy this if they released tankobons/digital volumes
  • The Kajiki Chef: Divine Cuisine – wouldn’t buy this
  • Stan for Salvation – probably wouldn’t buy this, actually maybe I would if it came with more extras/omake
  • Moebana – wouldn’t buy this
  • Ayakashi Triangle – still not sure if I want this physical…
  • Me and My Gangster Neighbour – would probably buy this
  • Handsome Must Die! – would buy this 🤣
  • Service Wars – would buy this 😂
  • Disporaiser – wouldn’t buy this

Would Buy Tankobons

  • 2.5 Dimensional Seduction – got this on my Amazon wishlist 😁

Look Forward To Reading

  • Kindergarten Wars – it’s pretty cute and pretty funny, but I feel like I probably wouldn’t really want to re-read it. Definitely in the top series I actively look forward to reading new chapters of though.
  • History’s Mentalist – it’s kinda sorta but not really depressing? 😅 It’s definitely interesting learning about all the different historical figures. Ganbare Sakutarou!
  • Dogsred – I like how the main character doesn’t feel like your usual sports manga main character. I mean that in a ‘I don’t really feel like cheering him on’ kinda way. He sure is entertaining though haha. I also like how it addresses the whole figure-skating-not-being-treated-like-a-“real”-sport point of view by showing how technical it is and how the skills transfer across to ice-hockey.

Enjoyable Reads

  • The Dark Doctor Ikuru – the premise is pretty absurd which is what makes this fun. I’m loving the latest reveal though about Moo-san 😧
  • Romantic Killer – full colour! Only ranked so low because I already know what happens thanks to the anime.
  • Jinrui-Shoku – liking the recent reveals about the mummilies. I know it’s not on par with The Three-Body Problem, but I’m totally getting those kinda vibes from it, at a level I can handle (The Three-Body Problem was really well written and made me feel really uncomfortable)
  • Shibatarian – horror at a level I can handle. Plus I like Watari.
  • Demon Lord Exchange – I like the reveal about the hero role, but not really sure where they can go from here.
  • Sachi’s Records ~Sachi’s Book of Revelation~ – short and silly
  • Wild Strawberry – not totally sold on this one yet
  • Gokurakugai – feel pretty generic but in a high quality way

Conclusion

So I ended up cancelling my Shonen Jump App subscription and just getting a Standard Manga Plus one. I figured since I’m here for the simulpubs I don’t really need the Deluxe. So I’m actually saving money 🤣 I think I’m in a super good position with my manga subscriptions – Manga Plus provides the seinen/wacky offerings as well as WSJ while Manga UP provides the josei/plot heavy series. If K-Manga (LOL) ever makes it out of North America I wonder if I would even both with it 🙃
