Just like with The Poppy Wars, I think this is a really good book, but I can’t say that I *liked* it 😅 It made me feel uncomfortable, in an it-was-well-written way.
I was intrigued about how the plot would go because you know June will get found out, but then what next? I was ok with the ending. Candice wasn’t a likeable character either. It was not very prudent of her to post stuff under her real name, yeah I would say that’s unprofessional? I suppose one of the themes of this book was to show how the internet can make and break careers (and reputations, poor already deceased Athena) very easily. So in that way the ending was very much ‘and the cycle continues’.
I guess (similar to The Poppy Wars), another thing about this book that made me uncomfortable was how realistic it felt. It’s hard to be entertained and not feel guilty when it feels like the same stuff is playing out right now in real life.
This was also a book that made me wonder what other people’s opinions were. Usually I don’t feel any urge to look up reviews.
So definitely gonna read Kuang’s other stuff and keep an eye out on other new works. It’s good to read non-comfort stories too sometimes 😝
