Scandinavian Style Wattle Pillows

I bought a whole bunch of Australiana fabric in a Boxing Day sale and the fabrics I loved the most were these black and blue wattle prints. So I’ve been saving them for a meaningful project, and then I found out my aunt and cousin-inlaws were having a combined 30th/60th birthday celebration and thought this is it!

I really liked this pillow design so was keen to use this pattern. After reading through it seemed like I could make two pillows by using the offcuts from the main design for a second smaller pillow. Which worked out well since I had 20″ and 25″ IKEA pillows on hand (I bought the feather and non-feather pillows to compare which ones I wanted to use for a different project). Luckily the smaller pillow was a good size smaller so I could cut additional strips so there was an actual visible pattern.

Since it’s winter, I thought it would be nice to have a fluffy backing, so used offcuts from the Triforce quilt I made. I was planning to use black, not grey, but decided it would be too intense. Lesson learnt – always sew from the cotton side or the fleecy will stretch 😣

So this project was also a bit of a test to see if I can get away with not using a zip in the back. I’ve decided that I would prefer my cases to be a tighter fit, so will make them a bit smaller which means I’ll need to use a zip. But I like the binding of the edges so will stick with that.
