Weekly Shonen Jump: Kyokuto Necromance Chapters  1-18 Review

The writing was on the wall for this from the very beginning…

Kyokuto Necromance

(Fusai Naba)

April 2024 to September 2024

18 Chapters

What I Liked

  • Chiitari’s design

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • It wasn’t cool. Souls as straw dolls just seemed kinda lame. This is a major flaw considering it was vying for the Bleach/JJK exorcist space
  • Too true to the generic shonen set-up with monster of the day/training arc/tragic parental backstory without any particular twist to set it apart*

Conclusion

I’m completely speculating here, but I feel bad for the author if WSJ pushed this particular series just cos JJK is ending soon and Nue’s Exorcist, while still running, obviously wasn’t the replacement they wanted. Well this clearly wasn’t gonna fit the bill either! Aliens Area was so much better imo. And the ending was total WUT. Maybe they shoulda touched on that earlier because it was pretty weird and they coulda made at least *something* out of it instead of this extremely generic series. I do like Naba-sensei’s art though, so hoping it’s third time lucky for them.

*ignoring the reveal in the last chapter – too little too late
