Weekly Shonen Jump: Yokai Buster Murakami Chapters 1-21 Review

Shame, I really liked this one

Yokai Buster Murakami

(Daiki Ihara)

June 2024 to November 2024

21 Chapters

What I Liked

  • I thought the common sense approach to yokai was funny
  • The way the yokai became cute (and trading cards) once they were defeated
  • Tenko’s crush on Murakami was also cute
  • Kuin and Mary’s relationship was amusing
  • Overall it was stupid funny and I enjoyed it

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • Sooo, I think Shugomaru went too young with its humour, and this one might have skewed too old? Some of the jokes, while funny, made me wonder if it was really appropriate for the younger readership in Jump. Like the bondage stuff, commenting on being ‘inside’ Tenko when she was transformed as a van and the Yandere soup…
  • The entire premise of the series banked on people accepting that Yokai are insecure about their lore and bad at debating. Since it’s a very silly premise I wouldn’t be surprised if most people didn’t accept it.
  • Sometimes the punchline was very obvious and other times it was completely random. I’m fine with obvious if the dialogue or imagery is still funny and I am quite a fan of this particular brand of random humour but I can see people thinking it’s just a stupid unfunny series

Conclusion

Well this sure was a 180 for me after Shugomaru, which I hated. The art has definitely gotten a lot better. Maybe third times the charm for Ihara-sensei. I feel if they can get that ‘goldilocks’ just right sense of humour, they could have the next Gintama on their hands. Silly, random and a little bit dirty kinda gag manga šŸ¤£
