Simpson Sweatshirt

Planning and Design

It’s always the projects that you have low expectations for that turn out the best 😂 A bit of a emotional rollercoaster this one. I started off by buying sample fabric to see if I liked it and I did so I bought 2m with the intention of making a Sable Boyfriend Cardigan with it. But when I received the fabric, I liked the look of it a lot less when viewing it as a large swath of fabric compared to the small sample strip… So I was pretty disappointed and not sure what to do with the fabric. Then I got the Simpson Sweatshirt as a free pattern from Style Arc and thought, why not, let’s just ‘use up’ the fabric making this pattern that I don’t think I’ll particularly like anyway, but might be useful for WFH attire.

Materials

  • Fabric – Fawn Beige Ridged Ponte Knit (Remnant Warehouse)

Construction

The pattern was very simple and therefore easy to assemble. I don’t think there’s anything of note to write about. I did leave out the cord and associated buttonholes though because I never really use or like these. I guess one thing is my machine seemed to skip stitches when I sewed a decorative top-stitch on a single layer but was fine with multiple layers?

Reflections

So yeah…I actually REALLY LOVE this sweater. The knit feels so nice and because it’s a good quality designer fabric, it looks pretty good, definitely home office worthy. The rib pattern means the contrast panel on the front actually works really well. And the huge pocket is useful for securely holding my phone while I carry a cup of tea and my breakfast up the stairs in the morning LOL. Plus the scooped back hem looks really good, I thought it was weird but now that I’ve made and worn it I totally see what they were going for with this design. It’s awesome.

Things I learnt:

  • Heavy knits make super duper comfy sweaters!
  • Samples are a guide only
