The majority of 2024’s anime viewings were either of manga I already read or continuations of series we were already watching. So I think the ‘Best Anime of 2024’ award easily goes to Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again 😁
In making the tier list, I was reminded how many series we dropped. Which makes Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again even more impressive, all the other anime-firsts (where neither of us knew the source material) were dropped. The other note-worthy dropped series are Magilumiere, I like the manga but the anime was super boring and KonoSuba, even having invested 2 seasons into this series, we just couldn’t be bothered with the third. Also Rinkai gets a mention for the absolutely atrocious animation (?) of the bike riding LOL.
Excellent
- Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again – Absolutely exceeded my expectations. The heart of the story carried it even with the fairly shoddy art (although the :3 face never got old). Bonus that it was a fully contained story in one cour. Funny and sweet 🥰
- Oshi no Ko – One of the best arcs given the anime it deserved
- 2.5 Dimensional Seduction – I had low expectations for this but I think the voice cast really add a lot of value, now I can read the manga in their voices.
- The Elusive Samurai – very impressive adaptation!
- Dandadan – So much fun! The jokes hit really well in the adaptation too.
Good
- Ron Kamonohashi Season 2 – The anime doesn’t really add anything to the manga but it’s still a good adaptation and I feel pretty happy that my husband has embraced the absurdity of the cases hahahahaha.
OK
- Delicious in Dungeon – I think the worldbuilding is really good, and the cooking aspect is interesting and amusing. But I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease at the addition of humour into the mix. It just felt really jarring going from quite serious situations to Laos’ obliviousness and the overdone reactions of the cast. I honestly don’t feel like I need to watch the rest.
- Mashle – This was the worst arc in the manga, I think it gets better from here. They also just dragged it out waay too much, it felt super filler.
- Spice & Wolf – So I loved the original anime and the light novels? So why did this feel so boring? It’s not because I knew what was going to happen, I had mostly forgotten the details and was looking forward to re-experienceing the story. But it just felt like a drag.
Bad
- Demon Slayer (Hashira Training Arc) – YAAWWWWWN. I want to drop this series but my husband thinks we have invested too much time in it and they are up to the final arc I guess (over 3 movies WHOO HOO so excited NOT)
- Re:Zero Season 3 – errrrr, so Re:Zero has become just like any other easy-mode isekai? Why does everyone love Subaru so much now, I still hate him LOL
We also watched the Spy x Family Movie at the theatre (it was ok) and Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, OMG that made me cry sooo much. I hope we find some fun new series in 2025, while I enjoy seeing manga I like animated, it’s also nice not knowing what’s coming next.
