Planning and Design
My friend for whom I made whale shark bags for himself and his older son has a younger son whose birthday is 6 months later, but I couldn’t bring myself to make yet another whale shark bag so decided to make a plushie instead. I chose the cutest pattern on Etsy and I might have sized it up a bit (can’t rmb…). In order to make it match the whale shark bags I used the leftover fabric and googly eyes, but wanted something fun for the stomach so used some leftover fabric from the Captain Hedgehog quilt I made.
Materials
- Pattern
- Whale Plushie (Etsy)
- Fabric
- Leftover Plain Slub Denim Fabric Dark 145 cm (Spotlight)
- Leftover Imagine Shooting White (Riley Blake)
- Eyes:
- Arbee Sew On Joggle Eyes
Construction
I used By Annie’s Soft and Stable as an interfacing layer of sorts because I thought it would give the silhouette a nice smooth finish. It did the trick but it was fairly difficult to sew, especially around the tail. You can actually see the stitches a bit 😅
The pattern was straightforward and I only had issues due to adding the Soft and Stable. I love how the tail curves up on its own 😁
Reflections
So younger son wasn’t that enthused about it but older son was haha. I think if I were to make it again I would use a white corduroy for the stomach instead and a soft fleece for the top ❤️
Things I learnt:
- I don’t particularly enjoy making plushies 😅
