Weekly Shonen Jump: Undead Unluck Chapters  1-239 Review

The last of the re-picked up WSJ dropped series…

Undead Unluck

(Yoshifumi Tozuka)

January 2020 to January 2025

239 Chapters

Oh boy…me and this series did NOT get off to a good start. All I recall from the first lot of chapters before I dropped it was so much groping. It really made me wonder if WSJ was trying to alienate their female readership 😐

I dropped this along with Chainsaw Man and My Hero Acadaemia. I picked Chainsaw Man up because my Japanese friend loved it (worth since I’m actually enjoying Part 2 more than Part 1) and I picked up My Hero Academia because I wanted to confirm my Dabi theory (not worth, but my SIL is now getting into it so might end up semi-worth so I can understand what she’s talking about…maybe). It was at this point I figured that I might as well read all chapters weekly cos catching up is pain. Was it worth for this one? Well I definitely liked it more after the time skip when Fuuko had more agency and was a leader rather than a follower.

Even if I ignore the initial ick factor, the series still wasn’t amazing. The art was serviceable and the abilities were usually pretty cringe. I suppose ‘wicked sick’ was chosen as Andy’s catchphrase cos it’s pretty dated?

The only bit I liked was how the Heart was in Unluck, because their ability meant they would (presumably) never live long enough to find out. That seemed pretty smart and twisted. But they half-arsed the execution…twice. Firstly Fuuko didn’t even need to die and they did the whole Promised Neverland memory loss thing. Secondly Fuuko only lost her memories for like half a chapter or something 🤨 Really wanted that happy ending I guess.

So not sad this one is over. It was the bottom of my list of 3 mid-tiers (in order: Mashle, Mission Yozakura, Undead Unluck). Hoping the next batch of mid-tiers are more to my liking.
