First I made a queen bed quilt cover. Then using the scraps, I matched colours and made a double bed sized blanket. I really like the prints, so I salvaged the scraps from that and decided to match patterns instead. I pieced as much of it together as possible into squares to be used in a lap blanket for my mum.
But before I got around to properly starting the project, my mum asked me to make a bed cover out of any leftover fabric I had. So I decided to incorporate the squares into this new project instead. It would mean a lot of white space but I figured that wouldn’t matter. This was going to be a slightly decorative functional piece.
I had decided pretty early on that I wanted to try tilted squares. Not 45° since that makes it just a diamond, and I feel like I’ve already done quite a few on-point designs. I wanted to do wonky squares. I can’t remember where I got the idea from, it was probably some template kit I saw in passing while browsing online quilting stores. But given not all my squares were the same shape, it felt like a good way to camouflage this fact 🤣
It was really hard finding out how to construct the wonky square block. Very lucky that El Petit Taller had done a tutorial when they had the same idea and difficulty finding instructions 🤩 So that meant…it was time for math 😅 I don’t hate math, I probably fall into the STEM girl category, but for some reason whenever I apply math to craft it ends up wrong LOL
I overcame that hurdle (surprisingly easily, I think the instructions were just that good) and mostly even managed to adjust it for my smaller squares too. In the end it wasn’t a big deal they were slightly smaller, since I made up the difference with the sashing/plain blocks.

The next issue was how to arrange a total of 18 squares, 1 small, 4 medium and 13 large… Pretty proud of my solution 🤣 It does mean the design has a right-side-up but that’s fine.
In the end, upsizing the design worked out well scrap wise, since I ended up using up the leftover backing from the scrappy blanket. Having the vanilla filler fabric also worked out well since I could see the checks through to help me align things nicely 😝 Plus it adds some visual interest in what would otherwise be a very plain design.
I got lazy at the end and just double-turn hemmed the edges instead of binding it. And no batting since it’s just a cover and would be wasted 🤣
In practice the blocks only being in the centre worked out when draped over the bed 👍
Oh yeah, and I also used the leftover quilt blocks from the original cover to make a…cooler bag…insert? Another request from my mum 😂
