Manga Plus: Magilumiere Co. Ltd. Chapters 1-160 Review

Magical women series

In the beginning I really liked this series. But as it went on I became less interested. I wonder if it’s because the cast got too big? Or maybe I preferred the focus on Kana’s growth and her attention-to-detail ‘ability’ more than the industry conspiracy stuff?

I also thought spinning magic as technology was cool to begin with, but they never really went into detail about how it was made possible. So it ended up being ‘code is magic’ which isn’t that interesting. And they never really went into detail about the reason why Kaii exist. I’m pretty sure they mention that it was a more recent development hence the magical girl profession becoming a thing? I would have liked more information on why magic power became a thing and why Kaii exist and are mutating. I suppose they have decided it’s just how that world is.

I guess I did like how each of the girls in Magilumiere had their own priorities and reasons for being magical girls (even if I can’t name most of them). But why are all the engineers dudes? It would have been more ‘girl power’ to me if women were also involved in the coding side. Sure they had some female CEOs. Maybe girls in code is too fantastical even for a series about magical girls LOL.

Some aspects of the series were a bit cringey (sorry Lily, I can’t take your poetry transformation incantations) and some were cliche (the way Kana defeated Manao). But I’ll give them credit for Koshigaya, she was definitely a wild card. The way she was open to her arranged marriage and how she seems happy with a kid later on was pretty cool.

I think in the end, what I expected/wanted from this series was different from what it actually ended up being hence my luke-warm reaction to it. It was a polished series for sure. And memorable for me since it was once of the first simulpub series that started a little bit after I started using Manga Plus.
