Manga Plus: Stellar Friends Chapters 1-28 Review

Nice English localisation of the title.

I feel like this was a very good concept that wasn’t executed all that well. Having abilities be linked to memories was a really cool idea. But the memories were never anything that meaningful, so it just ended up becoming a very long ‘special move’ name that got yelled out during battles. It also only really was showcased for Octo and Carrot, the other (few) fights you didn’t get to see into that person’s past.

I liked that they didn’t drag out the situation with Ichigo and Carrot. Given the rules of the game, it was obvious that betrayal was on the cards. So tackling it early on was a good idea.

The twists about the reason behind the game was good too. Octo being a normal girl who felt she needed to be extreme in order to hold Yota’s attention resulting in her rip up the shooting star to force a game cos she was bored in the equivalent of purgatory felt very neat and compact and true to her character. The ending was probably happier than any of them deserved, but whatever.
