Book Review: The Man Who Died Twice

This was a really fun book. Very well written in many ways. A bit convenient at times, but it kinda has to be for everything to come together and it really did come together haha. Also the title is super smart. Anyway, an info dump of thoughts roughly in plot order.

I felt soooo bad for Ibrahim. He was doing his best to be adventurous. It really makes me so mad that assholes like Ryan exist (in the book and real life). Attacking a defenceless elderly man is super duper low.

I was suspicious about the walk in the wood because I felt like the headphones thing wasn’t very fool proof. But I never suspected Poppy because I just thought she wasn’t well connected enough. But then after the motorcycle helmet reveal, I started wondering if maybe she was in league with Lance. But he didn’t seem that high up the chain either… But it definitely made me read Lance’s point of views more carefully and reading too much into some of his thoughts. I’m happy for his ‘ending’ haha.

Hearing Connie’s thoughts was really smart and entertaining. If we only saw the side she showed Chris and Donna, you’d be fooled into thinking she was a lot more put together LOL. It did make her more likeable and understandable when Donna said the person she thought she’d get along with around her age was Connie haha. But of course not likeable enough to feel bad when she got arrested.

It was nice how this book tackled the struggles people go through at different stages of their lives. It was sweet reading Chris’ thoughts about looking after himself. And Donna and Ibrahim’s chat and gently pushing each other to get over their loneliness/fears was super heart warming.

Elizabeth’s theory about people being the weather or being weathervanes felt really sound LOL. Definitely am a weathervane, I totally agreed with both Elizabeth and Ibrahim haha.

The who-dunnit part of the story was really well done and kept me guessing to the end. Elizabeth arranging for both the mafia and money launderer to get done in was brutal. It was interesting reading Joyce’s reaction to it all. Age really does give different perspectives.

I enjoyed how Steven got more page time in this novel. And Kendrick was a super cute addition. I really lol-ed at his comment about how Ibrahim didn’t have a father, ‘he would be like 1000 years old’ 🤣And the oldies getting him involved in watching the CCTV footage, totally inappropriate but hilarious. It would be nice to see Jason again in a future novel. I hope his relationship is going well.

I wasn’t expecting Bogdan to fall for Donna straight away. I thought Donna would have to work on him. But it should be cute.

So the first novel was kinda sad, because it covered a lot of regrets. This one was a lot more upbeat and Douglas (lol first time I’m mentioning him) was a good plot device. I really lol-ed at his 3 ex-es being in the same room at the very end. Hilarious. I suppose I didn’t feel that sad about Poppy because she chose that line of work. It does kinda suck because she probably wasn’t really suited to it and seemed like a nice girl, but it’s definitely a risky career choice.

I’m not expecting the next one to be as happy…Steven is obviously succumbing more to his dementia and at some point I expect something will happen to one of the main four club members… Also Joyce now has a dog, which I predict will be kinda annoying haha.
