Book Review: Dragons Kin

The Pern series is a comfort series for me and I think I understand even better why now that I’ve re-read a couple back to back. Not only does it always have a happy ending where the ‘good guys’ prevail, the ‘bad guys’ are always without a doubt ‘bad guys’ (no greys here) and hard work is always rewarded.

Unlike some of the other books, the goal of this one was extremely obvious haha. But because of the whole focus on meritocracy, it was nice following Kindan and Nuella’s growth. It was also nice that they weren’t a couple and were just good friends. And it was nice seeing how Cristo was a decent boy despite his dad being one of the ‘bad guys’. Sometimes I feel like Pern can be a bit…stereotypical when it comes to the ‘non-good guys’. Like people from certain areas always being a certain way, it sometimes felt like they were saying a persons traits were pre-determined by place of birth.

The focus on mining was interesting since I do happen to know a bit about the modern side of this 😅

I felt the part where Kisk changed her name a bit forced. But hey, watch whers aren’t human and therefore don’t have human concepts about names so *shrugs*.

It felt a bit short but that’s fine. I do like reading stories about non-dragon riders in Pern too. Like I really liked Nerilka’s Story. I’m guessing most of the Third Pass stories will be on the short side. And that all the stories from now on will be non Ninth Pass. I probably will even be getting into ones I didn’t read while I was in high school. Actually this is probably one of them as I don’t recall any of the events in this at all.
