So I wasn’t planning on tackling this for awhile. I did briefly consider it for the Modern Makers Christmas Gift Challenge but decided to make something else instead. But then, even though I was fairly organised and had my patterns printed out and interfacing stocked up, I ended up running out of pattern paper LOL. So since I was so organised for my bag making projects (zips, interfacing, batting, vinyl, netting go me lol) I figured I could at least start prepping this.

And ended up finishing it in one afternoon 😳 It was such a straightforward, logical design with well thought out and written instructions, it just came together so easily. The hardest part was actually attaching the woven interfacing to the fat quarters. Because tried as I might, I could not seem to remove the fold lines. I tried:

  • Ironing with steam
  • Heat pressing
  • Using the Phillips garment steamer (usually last resort that does the trick)
  • Ironing with steam AND wool mat

This was all in order too, so they all got multiple treatments in a row and I feel you can STILL see the fold lines. So going to unfold all the fat quarters I’m planning to use for other pouches to give them a headstart in relaxing…

I also got lucky and despite buying the wrong length open end zip, the pattern had instructions on how to shorten the zip. Which works out well because my sleeve zips are No. 3 gauge and I like that the main zip is the larger No.5 zip.

Also kinda surprised I finished this project so quickly since I also faffed about colour matching the zips I bought for a bunch of different projects. I couldn’t tell which pink would be suitable based off the website photos so bought 4 different shades and am quite happy I managed to get a decent match for all of them.

This was my first time using double-sided fusible batting and it’s pretty cool. Works perfectly in this pattern.

Some things I would do differently next time are the long edge bindings (I want to make them neater) and aligning the three layers so that the top is overhanging the layer below ever so slightly so that when sewn it gets pushed into alignment. Or try a walking foot to see if that stops it from shifting while being sewn.

So other than just being a well designed pattern with good instructions, I realise that things went very smoothly because I had the correct materials (no substitutions for once lol) and useful tools (heat press, denim needle, hump jumper, stiletto). This was like the ideal project experience, no real hindrances and finishing ahead of expected schedule 🤣 Now to test it to see if it’s fit for purpose 😁
