Girls A-Line Pullover – Pink Dandelions Modal/Cotton French Terry

Planning and Design

Dress #2 for Niece #2’s birthday. This is the medium weight french terry dress from Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mum. Honestly, I just really wanted to buy this fabric haha. It’s so cute! But I couldn’t justify it for myself because I don’t wear pink. So I will get quite some joy from seeing my niece wear this in my stead 🤣

Materials

  • Pattern
    • Girls A-Line Pullover (Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mum)
  • Fabric
    • European Modal/Cotton Blend Elastane French Terry Knit – Dandelions Pink (Wattle Hill Fabrics)
  • Thread
    • Maraflex col. 660

Sustainability Check

👍Fabric is 60% cotton and 35% modal which are both biodegradable and 5% elastane which makes the entire fabric technically biodegradable

👍 Maraflex is biodegradable

Construction

Unlike the other pattern, this one only had 1/4 inch seam allowances so I extended it to ⅜ inch. I also really didn’t want to do a facing on the neckline so just substituted for a 85% neckband like the other dress. And didn’t bother finishing any of the raw edges and just topstitched all the seams down (also like the other dress).

I made sure to make this dress second because I thought the fabric would be easier to work with and it sure was 😝

Reflections

It will be interesting to see if my niece has a preference in terms of fabric. And if she even likes these dresses at all haha. I think she liked the idea of the previous ones but never ended up actually really wearing them because of the style. But these are more t-shirt-y so I’m hoping it’s more to her tastes.

Things I learnt:

  • Unrelated to the fabric itself, but given I’m trying a new summary collage that includes the line-art, I had to create my own and managed using the AI features of Canva and the photo of the dress from the pattern listing… (that’s why it has zig zags on it, because the dress in the photo used that patterned fabric).
  • Modal french terry has a nice heft and stability to it

Update

Soooo, niece was super excited to try this on….but it didn’t fit over her head 🤣 I realised this was because I had changed it to a neckband instead of the facing. I didn’t realise it would make it unwearably small since I’m not used to kids body measurements 😅 So I changed it to a binding but also just generally made the neck opening bigger because a 6 year old’s disappointment at not being able to wear the dress twice is not something I want to deal with lol. The end result is it is now a bit too large, but imo not in a bad way, it makes it look oversized and cute.
