I received this as a Christmas present from my in-laws as part of a Book Box subscription.
It was entertaining but…shallow? Like a Hollywood action movie. I did like the varied cast. And I’ll give it slack for being the first book in a series, they always drag a bit due to having to establish characters and relationships.
I thought Amy and Adam’s relationship was very refreshing. And I look forward to Adam playing a larger role in future books. Plus I’d like to see Jeff and Henk actually work together, sounds like they have a fun dynamic.
I think I’m a little tired of the unreliable narrator technique. I suppose in this case Susan’s concern for Amy *was* genuine, but I kinda didn’t bother trying to figure out whodunnit (or rather who was Joe Blow/Francois Loubet) because often I felt like the narrator was withholding information or obscuring details to try to manufacture intrigue and I didn’t care for that. Which resulted in me not really becoming engaged with the story.
Plus it was obviously going to end well so I wasn’t very invested either. So more of a comfort mystery novel, which is nice to read every now and then and just means I’ll time when I read future novels so I’ll be approaching it with the right mindset to enjoy it properly.
