Manga Plus: DEEP RAPUTA Chapters 1-28 Review

This one went hard fast then kinda lost its way…

This started off really strong. I got nervous reading chapters wondering what was going to happen. But after Kei’s dad’s death things got a bit weird.

Firstly, what was with the guy who reverted to a kid? Was that ever explained.

Then the stuff with the (it seemed like only women) literally booby trapped victims. It felt like really forced sexual content. Although I guess we did get to see how innocent Kei is.

The stuff about society becoming dependent on AI feels pretty realistic though. And I like how they addressed how it was overly controlling for some but essential for others (Kei’s classmate seemed aware that it was helping suppress her trauma, but then there was Kei’s mother who seemed more brainwashed).

The fake-out of Muchuro using Kei but actually Muchuro was following Kei’s “orders” was also kinda realistic? The doctor engineering the situation only for the AI to doublecross her to fulfill a promise she made with a 12yo boy who didn’t realise the impact his innocent statement would make feels very like AI behaviour from a sci-fi pov. Also I totally see people wanting to create real life children with their AI lovers…

I don’t understand the doctor’s aim though. I don’t see how creating Raputa would help recreate Krolik.

In a way it was a happy-ish ending? I kinda like that Raputa still never really learnt to understand death. I guess that fits in with Kei’s promise to try to teach her and hence their partnership for the entirety of Kei’s life. And luckily she lost her ‘physical body’ because otherwise that would have been a very creepy partnership. I don’t recall who the character Raputa sent her final request to was though.

Overall, while it wasn’t all that neat, it was thought provoking in quite a few ways. And the art was gorgeous. Plus I think it is the kinda series that would benefit from a reread. So I’d buy it digitally if they ever released it 🙂
