Weekly Shonen Jump: Star of Beethoven  1-20 Review

Another piano series bites the dust

Star of Beethoven

(Morihiro Hayashi)

February 2025 to June 2025

20 Chapters

What I Liked

  • Learning trivia about Beethoven’s life

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • Straight piano playing in manga form isn’t interesting
  • The art was a bit all over the place
  • Having the main rival character back-down on his declaration that he would fail Yasu was lame and made the rival lose all credibility
  • All the characters seemed like annoying people
  • The sci-fi/fantasy aspect didn’t get fleshed out at all

Conclusion

This series was nothing like PPPPPP (which I feel was more artsy by representing musical pieces as visuals) so it would have been nice if it had been more edutainment about piano playing/composers/techniques/even different types of pianos than a straight shonen fantasy battle (but with piano as the arena). Not sure why they were so cagey on the specifics of Beethoven’s reincarnation (and why his re-existence was changing the world), unless it was because they actually hadn’t thought it through much? Kinda reminding me of Super Smartphone which ended up being ~aliens~ (I think) except it wasn’t even that in the end. I didn’t hate it though.
