I read the first 6 or so volumes many years ago on Mangamo or some other similar service (it was one of those with a free trial where you could read up to a certain volume). I liked it but not enough to buy it. Then last year my mum introduced me to Hoopla and I re-read the first couple of volumes and then continued up to volume 10. And it was just as good even though I knew what was going to happen for about half of it. I knew I would happily read it again. Which meant I should buy it (also so I could finish it haha). I umm-ed and ahh-ed about whether I should get it digital or physical and ended up going physical. Still waiting for volume 6 though…
I think what I really like about this series is how quirky the characters are. They…honestly don’t feel like normal high school students haha. It was really cute watching Shizuku and Haru bumble their way through their relationship. And even though Yamaken should be a really dislikeable character, I felt really bad for him and his one-sided crush on Shizuku. I did like that they agreed to be friends in the end.
Shizuku and Haru had a lot of ups and downs but really it came down to poor communication. The relationship that hit me harder was Asako and Sasayan. How Sasayan’s feelings towards Asako gradually changed but how hard it was to ‘prove’ he wasn’t just after her for her looks like all the other guys she had to deal with in the past. I thought he did a pretty good job of being forward without being pushy. True to his character, he was considerate of Asako’s feelings (for the most part, I don’t blame him for lashing out every now and then given how Asako acted haha). I especially liked how he understood that the most important thing to Asako was being with her friends (when they were at the festival). It was also cute how Mitchan seemed to realise that Sasayan liked Asako before he himself was even aware. Such a good guy Mitchan haha.
One relationship I wasn’t expecting was Takaya and Oshima though. It was obvious he was attached to her as a child but I wasn’t expecting the epilogue to give us a whole story from his point of view. It kinda got me in the feels like the epilogue to Horimiya that followed Shouta. I guess I like stories that follow characters from childhood to adulthood (or at least highschool lol).
The only character that was kinda annoying with Iyo. But even then her interactions with Yuzan were pretty funny.
So even though Horimiya and You and I Are Polar Opposites are both cuter high school romance series, this one feels more memorable since makes me cry soooo much. I didn’t mind Our Precious Conversations and would love to read another Robico series. They are so good at writing engaging characters.
