Weekly Shonen Jump: Harukaze Mound Chapters 1-30 Review

Another sports series bites the dust

Harukaze Mound

(Togo Goto & Kento Matsuura)

June 2025 to January 2026

30 Chapters

What I Liked

  • Art was nice
  • Characters had unique baseball quirks and likeable personalities

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • Too much focus on baseball. Not enough time spent on the characters and their interactions outside of baseball. Which means they were likeable but not lovable
  • Probably introduced too many characters too quickly

Conclusion

While it was the highest quality out of WSJ’s recent forays into sports manga again, I think it tried to move too fast and therefore didn’t manage to engage readers. Honestly, it reminds me of Oblivion Battery (the set up with a school not having a baseball club), which makes it fairly easy to compare what OB did better than HM. And I definitely think that the difference was the focus on the characters. I should probably pick up OB again so I can catch up…
