Manga UP: I Think Our Son Is Gay Chapters 1-104 Review

Wow, wasn’t expecting to bingeread this.

I feel like this is the type of series you would need to read at least one tankobon at a time. Even though each chapter is standalone, it has a really good underlying character progression for multiple characters that kinda gets lost if you don’t read multiple chapters back to back.

The mum is a such a great character. Acknowledging that she has much to learn about homosexuality and taking care to identify her unconscious biases and changing her mentality. And I liked the way she interacted with husband. Some people might think she was too lenient on him and his outdated thoughts, but I feel like the way she handled it is how it kinda needs to happen in real life. Some people will just get defensive if you challenge them so they just need to learn the hard way by experience. It made me really sympathise with the mum’s coworker and his partner, having to be so polite when other people are being downright rude. And it made me realise how wide-ranging and misguided the thoughts some people have about sexuality are… The mum’s colleague’s reactions to their gay coworker and the opinions of the other mothers were kinda tough to read tbh…

On the flip side though, I thought it was really heartwarming how the childhood friend who had a crush on Daigo immediately supported him when he turned her down and explained why. Those two are gonna be besties forever aren’t they ❤️

Yuri was my favourite character though. So observant and supportive. I guess I also felt a kinship with him over the way he would write out his impressions of different media 😋And I loved how when he entered high school he became aware that he might be asexual. I would totally read a sequel series that followed Yuri through his journey of self-discovery.

So this was a very sweet but also eye-opening series. It made me realise I can always try more to be supportive as well.
