I wasn’t really sold on this series after reading 3 chapters or so, but then I found out how short it was and decided to just finish reading it to get it off my list.
I didn’t realise at first that this was by the Barakamon mangaka. The art is waay more polished now. The vibe is similar I guess. I’m not a huge fan of Barakamon, but I do like Kyoichi as a MC much more than Handa.
It was hard to get into this series at first because I agreed too much with Kyoichi on how annoying Leo is. But Leo has nothing on how absolutely awful Kyoichi’s dad is. That father is so irresponsible it wasn’t actually funny at all. I could completely understand Kyoichi getting so mad that the tears couldn’t stop flowing.
At some point Kyoichi started seeing Leo as a friend. It didn’t feel abrupt despite how short this series is, so kudos to the author. What did feel abrupt was the ending. I suppose Kyoichi managing to put down some roots was a potential ending point, but it really felt like the start, not the end.
Overall I liked Kyoichi’s relationship with his sister and the youth of the shopping district. It would have been nice to learn more about his mother, and maybe see him form more friendships at school, or even see what he decided to do with his life after he graduated, but at the same time I’m not sure if I could have stuck around for all of that with his dad still in the picture 😅
