Weekly Shonen Jump: Martial Master Asumi Chapters 1-32 Review

Man I wanted a sports manga in WSJ, but not this…

Martial Master Asumi

(Kawada)

June 2023 to February 2024

32 Chapters

What I Liked

  • Nao and her spunk
  • The emphasis on safety

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • The art was kinda chubby in a non-muscular way, it felt jarring
  • It felt like it relied quite a bit on pre-knowledge of MMA and the individual martial arts used. Or is it that MMA doesn’t really have a set structure in terms of tournaments etc to help set the goal progression for the characters? I found it hard to be invested in their journeys.
  • Nito is not that interesting and his dual personality was cliche

Conclusion

I kinda liked how Nito was interested in becoming an aged care nurse and the guy he fought to go pro was also one. That was the most interesting aspect of this manga which didn’t really get to go anywhere since the series got axed…
