Weekly Shonen Jump: Dear Anemone Chapters  1-17 Review

The darkest WSJ title in a little while 😮

Dear Anemone

(Rin Matsui)

February 2024 to June 2024

17 Chapters

What I Liked

  • Science!
  • Accurate on the harshness of nature
  • It was the right level of violent
  • The girls were pretty cool
  • It was actully pretty funny in parts!

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • The main character and the friend he was searching for probably weren’t ‘cool’ enough for the target demographic
  • More straight science, not the easy to digest Dr Stone edutainment kinda science
  • The goals weren’t terribly gripping (find the research notes and his buddy)
  • No power structure and lack of explanation on how and why the characters had their powers

Conclusion

Surprisingly there seemed to be a lot more information on the animals and not the flowers. I would have liked to learn more about plants and for there to have been more plant people.

Overall I actually really liked this series. I quite liked all the characters (despite being seemingly unable to remember most of their names…) and it was right on my gore tolerance threshold. I will forever remember this series for ‘loot my own corpse’ dude 🤣 I guess this series might have done better in general Jump Plus, but it would have overlapped too much with Wild Strawberry. I hope it gets a proper epilogue, that ending was very abrupt and generically vague.
