Portsea Luxe Sweat

Planning and Design

The illustration for this sweatshirt looked so cute I knew I wanted to make it. Luckily I had enough fabric leftover from the Manatee Sweater…well I would have if I’d paid more attention to the pattern pieces 😅 I think I could have made it work if I’d done the fold pieces first, but in the end had to make do with the bottom hems being against the grain…hoping it will be ok.

Materials

  • Pattern
  • Fabric
    • Leftover Medium Grey Marle Cotton French Knit (Homecraft Textiles)

Construction

The pattern was quite simple. Although I was a bit sad the walking foot couldn’t deal with bulk of the hems. So some of my topstitching is nicer and flatter than other parts 😅

One change I made was to fully machine stitch the arm cuffs. I really hate securing cuffs with a couple of handstitched areas, I’m always so paranoid it will just rip and damage the fabric.

Reflections

This is a really comfy sweatshirt and perfect for those sunny-but-windy days where you need a second layer but going longsleeves is too hot ❤️ Would totally make it again in a different colour/print.

Things I learnt:

  • Use a normal sewing foot with the jump hem tool for the bulky seams instead of the walking foot.
