Book Review: Butter

So this book was pretty depressing in the same way as the Barbie movie: too real in terms of the shit women have to go through. And not even much uplifting sisterhood as a balancer.

I guess I also didn’t feel comfortable with following the main character who is a journalist. I felt bad for most of the people she interviewed and/or deceived. I believe journalism is important, but I guess a lot of the work Rika was doing was more tabloid rather than news (although Kitamura did cover illegal dumping. So their magazine wasn’t all bad).

And I suppose it felt like everyone in the book were living unhappy lives.

One of the nice things though was Shino and Rika’s relationship. I’m glad that Kitamura’s misinterpretation about them was rectified. And it was thanks to Shino that they even were able to form a community/support group.

So I wasn’t really that impressed by this book but then I read an article about how it’s pretty much based on real life events and that soured me on it a bit more. If it was long past events then I would be fine with it, but the lady involved is still alive and so I feel that’s a bit disrespectful.

On a side note, this book marks another case of recommended book through media reviews is depressing haha.
