Weekly Shonen Jump: Syd Craft: Love is a Mystery Chapters  1-28 Review

Shame, this one is better than Himaten

Syd Craft: Love Is a Mystery

(Taishi Tsutsui)

November 2024 to June 2025

28 Chapters

What I Liked

  • The mysteries were pretty fun
  • All the girls were actually likeable 😯
  • Syd was likeable too

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • Maybe too much focus on the detective work instead of the romance?
  • The mystery childhood friend was too obvious (should have been more vague so that the reader gets invested in their bias being the one LOL)
  • Syd has no friends??? Must be because he’s a workaholic. But I do feel he needed a wingman/woman.
  • Maybe not enough of *those* romcom moments…ahahaha….
  • Wrong magazine for ‘innocent’ adult romance? Like the way they behave is acceptable for high schoolers but not so believable for adults? Would the demographic care for this type of romance?

Conclusion

I thought this was a nice easy read. I was quite fine with the three main girls. But you could tell the series was grasping at straws when it started introducing a bunch more random girls. And then the very rushed reveals.

I thought the hypnosis stuff was a good enough explanation for the main mystery. Zero Craft was a weak villain though due to not getting anytime to be fleshed out.

I do wonder if Tsutsui-sensei actually wanted to write a proper mystery series. I felt the cases were well thought out and at times reminded me of Ron Kamonohashi in terms of absurdness/silliness. But then due to his previous series was pushed to make it a romcom instead? Resulting in people having the wrong expectations. Who knows, but I hope he has better success with his next series.
