Weekly Shonen Jump: Gonron Egg Chapters 1-21 Review

I wasn’t hate reading it, but it was a struggle to continue reading it every week.

Gonron Egg

(Shuhei Tanizaki)

October 2025 to March 2026

21 Chapters

What I Liked

  • Ohma’s hatched form was pretty cool
  • The concept of having the two siblings serving two different Kings could have been interesting

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • Fairly generic start
  • Pacing was pretty slow,
  • Lack of hints that the usurper King’s goals were more complex than ‘destroy humanity’ meant there was no real hook
  • Fights weren’t very memorable
  • Lack of allies, the liberation army only really appeared when the series looked like it was going to be cancelled anyway

Conclusion

That was a particularly unsatisfying ending. Especially since they revealed that the usurper King was actually treating Gonron’s sister really well and had saved a bunch of other children too. But I don’t think that revelation would really have helped the series since the usurper King’s plan of destroying all the ‘bad humans’ before returning the children to the human world is massively flawed haha.

I also didn’t love the art style. The anatomy was sometimes a bit distracting and to be honest it reminded me a lot of The Seven Deadly Sins, a series I don’t particularly like.
