Weekly Shonen Jump: The Mage Next Door Chapters 1-21 Review

Oh dear…turns out I never committed this series’ title to memory…

The Mage Next Door

(Hideaki Nabe)

November 2025 to April 2026

21 Chapters

What I Liked

  • Osoegawa’s t-shirts
  • The art was kind of charming

Where I Think Things Went Wrong

  • Lack of explanation on how Osoegawa managed to create so many different types of magic
  • Given the range of magic at Osoegawa’s disposal, I feel like it didn’t need to be a fight focussed series, he could have tackled various problems with magic and that might have been more interesting
  • Despite having Mini-Magus and Yobuko, Osoegawa still felt like a lone wolf, I don’t feel like he really played off either of them that well

Conclusion

I didn’t dislike this series. Maybe I was biased because the main character is a lazy silver-haired, dead-fish-eyed dude and I was getting slight Gintama vibes from the set-up. At any rate I found it inoffensive. I did note however, that Osoegawa’s repertoire of ‘useless’ spells reminded me a lot of Frieren’s side-quest of collecting weird spells, and really this series just can’t compare (even if that aspect isn’t the main premise of Freiren).
