Kinda surprised this only the third take I’ve seen on the premise.

Things I Like
- The food (both monster-based and normal) looks really nice
- The main character mostly seems pretty sensible…
- They have a goal and a reason for Rudd to get stronger
Things That Could Be Improved
- I don’t like how the main character just brushed off the warning in the book about the previous monster eater…
- Wondering if their party will get any larger? I kind of understand why they might not want it to.
Verdict
So I enjoyed Arifureta before it got bogged down in teenager sex. And the cooking parts of Delicious in Dungeon are interesting (my issue with it is I find the way the characters act tonally jarring). So third time lucky with this one? It’s definitely an easy mode kind of manga, but they make things interesting not just with the way he cooks up the monsters, but the monster essence vs mana and way Rudd has to sometimes use the monster skills in a round-a-bout way. And I like the friendly atmosphere between Rudd and Elyssia. I’m glad that Rudd has a reason to use the skills he’s obtaining by helping out Elyssia try to save her previous party members.
