Planning and Design
This is the third time I have taken a king sized quilt cover and modified it to a queen size with snap buttons for my Nan-in-law.It was my mother-in-law’s idea and a very good one if you ask me. Helps my NIL stay independent for one more thing for as long as possible.
Materials
- Fabric:
- Cotton House Smoke Bush King Quilt Cover
- Buttons:
- White plastic snap buttons (Snaps Australia)
Construction
I thought it would be the same process as previous times:
- Trim the sides and fold over to form side hems for snap button placement
- Add bottom hems using the offcuts from the sides
- Apply snap buttons
But this cover was a fancy one with the wrap around at the bottom 😅 So I ended up having to frankenstein as much as I could to extend the length using what little offcuts I had. I had to use some white cotton from my stash for the hems. Good thing I have an entire roll of it LOL
Then I ran out of snap buttons 😂 Quilts are so big, I always forget how long it will take to sew (straight seams/hems but such loooong seams…) and how much/many materials it requires. So I had to gift it half complete and take it back 🤣 (it was for her 80th birthday) There is a slight colour difference between the old and new snaps but not enough to worry about.
Side note: I understand that quilt covers are expensive because it’s a lot of fabric and fabric is expensive, but I have been extremely unimpressed by the quality of the last couple of quilts covers I have bought…. The Bambusa and Catherine Lansfield ones had faulty seams. This one had a stain that I only noticed after I’d already started cutting it up 😣 I had washed the cover before working on it too, which means it’s a permanent stain… It really makes me feel like I should just make my own quilt covers from now on.

Reflections
This isn’t really a fun sort of project but I am happy to help out my NIL.
Things I learnt:
- Not sure if it’s possible but check the type of fastening on the cover for this kind of project
