Manga Plus: The God Before Me Chapters 1-53 Review

Odachiiii I’m gonna miss youuu 🤣

The only other shogi manga I’ve read is March Comes in Like a Lion and this is like on the opposite end of the emotional spectrum LOL. I love the characters in this, they were all really quirky in different ways and so so entertaining. But of course no one could top Odachi and his internal dialogue. They were even more amusing than the multiple Katarina’s from Villainess. I loved the descriptions of each of them whenever they appeared.

It was really funny how tactless the shogi players were to each other when doing commentary, is that normal? 🤣 I can’t pick who my second favourite shogi player would be. Odachi’s sensei was kinda cute with his little habits (that rubbed off onto Odachi) as well as his desire to not get shown up by his student. Takama-sensei kinda felt like an alien haha. Yasukochi senior was hilarious playing into the villain role and I appreciated his fashion sense. Yasukochi junior was unsettling in an amusing way. Only Uekata was kinda a bit boring, but that was his role, to be the ‘unreachable God’. As for other side characters, I like the relationship Odachi had with his housemate and the way his family were so harsh towards him was funny too.

So Odachi had plenty of ‘moments’ but I think the one that made the biggest impression on me was when he was so deep in thought about shogi he walked into the river LOL.

This one will probably never get picked up for English tankobon release, not even digital, but if for whatever reason it did I would totally reread it.
