Aww I just realised Biwa has a tea cup on his head in the cover art!
I can’t believe this was only 16 chapters. I felt like it packed in a lot! So many recipes and so much character development. And somehow it also didn’t feel rushed, even though the family situation got completely resolved. I didn’t find it unrealistic that it turned out that way, it was obvious everyone cared for each other, they just weren’t able to communicate. But bumbling Wheat helped with that haha.
The most interesting thing that didn’t really get delved into too much was Biwa’s origins. Given it was really crucial for revealing Fran’s motivations, I thought maybe it would have gotten more explanation? Like how did Biwa end up being the gardener? How did the cross between the familiar and a cat end up with a being that was capable of speech? Did Fran not remember owl Biwa at all? Maybe I’m just biased because Biwa is my favourite character.
Anyway, I suppose this story was a baking one, with the twist of Wheat reacting to the weird ingredients in Kirsch 😝 Because the desserts were half the focus of the story, it was really nice that the series was in colour! I think mato-sensei did a really great job of keeping it light while still sentimental. I’m looking forward to their next work!
